A common butterfly, Vanessa kershawi is often seen here in spring (now!), in its native habitat. I hope you mainly notice pattern and movement. I love to watch these insects, as they disappear and reappear: they are masters of disguise and evasion – their erratic flight patterns outwit the birds who would eat them – and they are seldom still, making them difficult to paint or even watch! I love being in the wild environment where I do try to follow them.
