Burnished Brass Moth

Description

I found this moth in the archive drawers at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, they let me borrow it so that I could paint it.  I was absolutely in awe, that this little moth, roughly 6 cm across, has patches on its wings which look for all the world as if someone has applied gold leaf (or even brass leaf if there is such a thing!).  It’s just incredible. He’s grown gold leaf on his wings!  This fella goes well with Hummingbird Hawk Moth, they are the same size and framed in matching frames.

Painted accurately in rich earthy colours, this is a watercolour painting on professional watercolour paper (Coldpress), dimensions, including frame: 27 x 23 cm
